Great Summertime Apps for Kids

If you have children, you know how tough it can be to keep them busy and engaged through the long months of the summer vacation.  With no school to attend and no homework to turn in, keeping your kids away from the television or the gaming console can be hard work in the best of times.  The good news is there are plenty of mobile apps out there that can help make summertime both rewarding and educational.

If you’re hoping to keep your kids away from their phones as well as their Wiis, there are apps that can help.  The folks at Appolicious, for example, recently compiled a list of iPhone apps to help parents find exciting summer activities for kids, a list that includes Library Locator, the Theme Park and Water Park Locator, and the free Mom Maps, an app that makes recommendations for child-friendly playgrounds, restaurants, and museums.

Some kids are more industrious than others, and if you’re anything like us, you’re slowly running out of things your kids can do for a little extra pocket money.  If that’s the case, apps like Chore Pad can certainly help, and others like Epic Win actually turn summer tasks into a role-playing game, where chores become quests that earn virtual rewards when they’re completed.

Of course, there are a host of educational apps out there as well that will help keep your kids busy over the summer, whether they’re bored at home or in the back seat of the car on a road trip.  Fun Educational Apps recently released a list of great summer apps for kids, most of which are designed to keep them learning while they’re not in school.  There are of course a great many reading, math, and history apps, but among those featured include A Trip in the USA and Around the World, both child-friendly apps that can teach them a great deal about the places you’re visiting on your summer vacation.

It’s important to keep your kids active and away from the television as much as possible during the summer, but it’s just as important to realize that the mobile apps they use can be more than video games.  Hopefully the apps we’ve showcased here can help.
