Five Improvements in the New iPad

You’ve probably already heard that the new iPad will be hitting the shelves this week…or would be, if Apple hadn’t already sold out the first shipment.  So far, it seems the biggest complaint about the latest iteration of Apple’s flagship tablet might be that it’s too popular, but for those of you looking to pick one up, here are a few of the improvements that you’re in store for:

  1. Retina display:  Described by at least one tech analyst as “the best display I’ve ever seen. Anywhere, period,” the iPad boasts a pixel density so high that the human eye is incapable of distinguishing between individual pixels.  If you like your tablets in HD, the iPad delivers.
  2. 4G:  Available for AT&T and Verizon subscribers, the 4G iPad functions at a staggering ten times faster than its older sibling.  It will also work on all available 3G networks as well.
  3. Voice Dictation:  While the new iPad won’t be coming with the popular voice assistant Siri, it will be equipped with voice dictation functionality that currently supports US and UK English, Australian, French, German, and Japanese. This is a boon for those who’ve yet to master the iPad’s keyboard without the addition of a peripheral, and it will also work with third-party apps like Facebook and Twitter.
  4. Better photos:  The new iPad boasts a 5-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera that shoots 1080p HD video, a great improvement on the earlier version of the iPad camera.  This will be especially useful with the new iPhoto app ($4.99), which allows for easy editing and syncing between other iOS devices.
  5. Mobile Hotspot:  If you happen to be a Verizon subscriber, you’ll have access to Apple’s Personal Hotspot service, which allows you to tap into your iPad’s increased connection speed with up to five additional devices.  Verizon confirmed that this service comes at no additional charge to the current data plan.  This is a one-up on popular services like MiFi, which require multi-year commitments from their subscribers.

Sure, it’s a little bit thicker and a little bit heavier, but the new iPad is definitely packing more punch for all that extra heft.  And if you’re thinking about developing a mobile app with the new iPad in mind, let us know and we’ll get you started!
