Great Apps For New Year’s Resolutions

Great Apps For New Year’s Resolutions

Assuming you’re over your champagne hangover, we’d like to point out that it’s that time of year again when we all resolve to be thinner, healthier, smarter about our finances, kinder to our fellow men, etc.  And while 88% of us will fail to keep our New Year’s resolutions, here are a few mobile apps that might help bring that number down a bit in 2012.

Whether you’re trying to save money, quit smoking, or meet some other personal goal, perhaps the best all-around resolution keeper is Big Change.  Designed essentially as a reward-based game of sorts, Big Change allows you to set up to as many as eight preset goals and one custom goal and track your progress as you go.  Unless your resolution is to spend less time on your mobile phone, this app can help.

If your New Year’s resolution was influenced by all the sugary goodies in which you’ve been indulging over the last few weeks, there are a couple of fitness apps out there that definitely stand out.  Nike Training Club comes with dozens of custom-built workouts from which you can choose, fully loaded with detailed instructions and audio support.  For a more high-powered motivation, check out Gympact, a fitness app recently featured on Mashable.  Gympact asks users to set fitness targets and, here’s the great part, to name the price they’ll pay if they fall short of those targets.  If they do fail, they forfeit the money; if they don’t, they take a percentage of the total of all those who did.  It’s a creative motivator, but it’s probably not best undertaken with any New Year’s resolution involving money.

And speaking of money, debt guru Dave Ramsey released a mobile app last year designed to help users settle their accounts.  Among other personal finance apps, PadGadget recently praised the app Mint as one of the better apps for even the most disorganized.

And if you’re feeling a bit guilty for all the loot you raked in this holiday season, give Catalista a try.  This app makes it easier for you to volunteer at local non-profits, and bases its suggestions not only on your location and schedule, but what you yourself actually enjoy doing.

In any case, 2011 was a great year for mobile apps, and we’re expecting 2012 to be even better.  Happy New Year!
