Tune in to the Crunchies

This Thursday, the 2012 Crunchies Awards will be held in San Francisco.  Sponsored by GigaOm, VentureBeat, and TechCrunch, and hosted by the Daily Show’s John Oliver, the Crunchies pay homage to the most inventive startups, as well as to the best internet and technology innovations of the year.

The Crunchies themselves include a host of various categories, some more frivolous than others.  There’s probably a more honest name for the “Best Time Sink” award, but Angry Birds Star Wars is certainly a favorite.  One of the more compelling categories for the 2012 Crunchies, however, is “Best Technology Achievement.”  Siri took the prize in 2011, and while Apple’s digital voice assistant is certainly a remarkable technological achievement, the nominees for 2012 give an idea how much sexier this last year has been:  Google’s recording our lives in its glasses, Felix Baumgartner made an historic leap from space, and humanity landed a space ship on Mars, which then proceeded to tweet cheekily.

Of special interest to us here at AppMuse, however, are the awards dedicated to mobile applications. Evernote, an application that syncs a user’s information (photos, notes, audio, etc.) across multiple devices, took the top prize last year, and is in the running again this year.  Other nominees include Google Maps, Grindr, Instagram, and Square, an app that requires a peripheral card reader, and allows anyone to accept credit card payments.

You may have noticed that while this year’s nominees are all certainly excellent apps, none of them were produced by individual developers, and none of them are particularly new.  Given that the Crunchies award the Best New Startup, we’d very much like to see them honor the entrepreneurial spirit of the mobile app market and introduce a category for Best New Mobile App, or something like it, one that awards the “little guy,” the lone individual plugging away in his basement as he works towards turning a good idea into a reality.
